Senior Pictures? Yearbook Portraits? What's the difference?
What's the difference between the yearbook picture and senior portraits? The yearbook picture is the picture that runs in the yearbook. Every school has their own policy for what they want in the yearbook. Some are pretty strict and traditional looking. Others are more casual. Your yearbook picture will be seen, mostly, at the end of your senior school year when the yearbooks are distributed and at class reunions 10, 25 or 50 years from now. Senior portraits are more than just a yearbook picture. They are the pictures that you give to friends and relatives. They hang on the walls in your home and are seen much more frequently by the people that are closest to you. Because those pictures are seen much more than your yearbook picture, many students choose to have more extensive photoshoots that depicts their personality and interests. Bender Photography can do both types of pictures, and often does creates photos for the yearbook. But our specialty is to create pictures that depict your personality, and that usually never looks like a traditional yearbook photo.
What is the best time to have senior portraits taken? Traditionally senior pictures are taken during the Summer before your senior year begins. However, we do senior pictures all year long. Some students want to have them taken closer to graduation. Others want to wait to have braces removed so they can show off their new smiles. Others do it when they can fit it in to their busy sports or activity schedules. At Bender Photography, the best time to have your senior pictures takes is whatever works best for you.
What are the yearbook picture requirements for my school? Every school has a policy for senior pictures that appear in their high school yearbook. Some schools have contracts that require that you use their photographer if you want to appear in their yearbook weather you like it or not. Other schools allow you to use any photographer as long as the picture meets particular requirements for yearbook publication. That might mean that girls are required to wear a "drape" and boys are required to wear a "tux" Here is a brief rundown of the high schools in our geographic area and their requirements for the yearbook picture:
Stroudsburg High School. Uses a contract photographer for much of their photography but allows students to provide their own pictures from other studios if they meet the requirements. Deadline for yearbook pictures is January 3, 2019 for the Class of '19 book. Girls must wear a drape and boys must wear a tux. They must be photographed against a specific background. Bender Photography photographs many Stroudsburg students and can meet the yearbook requirements.
Pocono Mountain East High School. PME recently changed their yearbook picture policy. All seniors are required to be photographed by the school photographer for the "senior section" of the yearbook. Personalized photos, that show your uniqueness and interests can be included in student ads that are published in the book. Call Bender Photography to discuss how to create amazing pictures for your yearbook ad!
East Stroudsburg South High School. Yearbook requirements are the same as Stroudsburg High School's ~~ Drape for girls, tux for boys, specific background (which we have).
East Stroudsburg North No current information, but we have created yearbook pictures for ESN recently.
Pleasant Valley High School. PV requires that you use the photographer that they are contracted with if you wish to appear in their yearbook.
Pocono Mountain West High School. PMW does not accept photo from outside studios for publication in their senior section. Contact the school yearbook advisor about when the school photographer will be taking the pictures for the yearbook. You may use any pictures in your recognition ad, however, and many students like to use personal photos for that.
North Warren Regional High School. Bender Photography has a contract with North Warren to provide their yearbook photos. Girls must wear a drape and boys must wear a shirt and tie. Picture days are scheduled in June, usually the week after graduation. Students who can't be available during that time period may come to our studio or have them taken at a make-up day in the fall.
Bangor High School Has not replied to our information request
Pen Argyl High School Has not replied to our information request
Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg Uses a contract photographer but also allows photos from our studio in their yearbook.
Cyber Students/Home Schoolers The policy is likely to be the same as the high school that you are affiliated with. Contact your school to make sure.
No matter what your school's yearbook picture policy is, you can have your personal senior pictures taken anywhere. Schools cannot force you to buy pictures taken by their contracted photographer. And in New Jersey schools cannot force you to use their photographer for the yearbook photo, either. Check out this law http://law.onecle.com/new-jersey/title-18a/18a-18a-49.3.html
